The Ancient Anuradhapura City
The Ancient Anuradhapura City
Anuradhapura, one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities and the ancient capital of Sri Lanka, is renowned for its well-preserved Buddhist monuments and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most important ancient cities, known for its deep historical and religious significance. Founded in the 4th century BCE, it was the first capital of Sri Lanka and served as a central hub for Theravada Buddhism for over a thousand years.
The city’s prominence grew due to its strategic location and the establishment of the sacred Sri Maha Bodhi tree, a sapling from the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. This site, along with many other sacred structures, attracted pilgrims and fostered a thriving religious community.
Anuradhapura is renowned for its architectural marvels, including massive stupas like Ruwanwelisaya and the Jetavanaramaya, which are among the tallest ancient structures in the world. These religious monuments reflect the city’s importance as a spiritual center.
The city’s sophisticated irrigation systems, including large reservoirs and canals, supported a flourishing agricultural economy, enabling it to sustain a large population. These hydraulic innovations are a testament to the advanced engineering skills of the ancient Sinhalese civilization.
Anuradhapura’s decline began in the 10th century CE due to invasions and the shift of the capital to Polonnaruwa. However, the city remained a key pilgrimage site and continued to be revered in Sri Lankan history.
Today, Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage site, drawing visitors from around the world who come to explore its well-preserved ruins and experience its spiritual heritage. The city stands as a symbol of Sri Lanka’s ancient past and the enduring influence of Buddhism on its culture
